The Story Behind…
Balloons

It was at the Thunderbird Graduate School that we attended our first hot air balloon classic.  Over 100 balloons of all sizes, shapes and themes getting ready for flight.

A hot air balloon consists of a nylon bag called the envelope, a gondola to carry passengers and a source of heat, usually an open burner flame to heat the air inside the envelope.  Sizes range from the smallest for one person to the largest for over two dozen people.

Watching the balloon prepared for flight is impressive.  The envelope is laid out flat on the ground, the inflator fan is placed at the balloon opening to fill the balloon with air and finally the burner is fired up.  Just imagine about 100 balloons inflating at once!
