The Story Behind…
Kakabeka Falls

Kakabeka Falls, The Niagara of the North

We heard it and felt it…A thunderous roar and the coolness of tiny droplets of water spraying on and about us.  Mesmerized we were as we watched the falls plummet through the river gorge.  What a magnificent sight and sound!

Kakabeka Falls cascades over a 130 ft. cliff on the Kaministiquia River in Oliver Paipoonge, Ontario, just west of Thunder Bay.  The name "Kakabeka" comes from the Ojibwe word gakaabikaa “waterfall over a cliff".  Because of its size and ease of access, it has been consequently nicknamed "the Niagara of the North".

Captured with a 4x5 camera using a slow shutter speed renders the water in the falls a silky smooth.
